Easy Ways to Use Polyacrylamide for Stickiness

Table of Contents

In many industries and building projects, polyacrylamide (PAM) is used to make things thicker and stickier. PAM is a kind of polymer. When it dissolves in water, its long chains create strong links. This increases the water’s viscosity and resistance. As a result, it becomes thicker.

This article explains the types of PAM for thickening, how to use them, and where they are used.

🔍 Types of PAM for Thickening

There are two common forms of PAM used for viscosity:

  1. Granular PAM
  • Appearance: Solid particles
  • Dissolving speed: Slower
  • Best for: Low-cost, low-speed use in factories
  1. Powder (Quick-Dissolving) PAM
  • Appearance: Fine powder, smaller particles
  • Dissolving speed: Fast, gives high viscosity
  • Best for: Projects needing high stickiness and quick use, like glue, putty, or coatings

💡 Recommended range:

Use anionic PAM with a molecular weight between 18 million and 22 million for better thickening results.

✅ Suggested Concentration and Mixing Tips

Depending on your needs, adjust the PAM dose:

  • Typical use concentration: 0.1% to 0.5%

(That means 1–5 kg of PAM per ton of water)

  • How to mix:

Add PAM slowly while stirring. Don’t dump it all at once. This helps avoid lumps and ensures full, even mixing.

🏗️ Common Uses and How PAM Helps

  1. Construction Industry
  • Glue/Coatings: Increases thickness, helps better spreading and sticking
  • Putty/Mortar: Makes smoother textures, reduces falling off, improves crack resistance
  • Concrete Additive: Makes concrete thicker, reduces bleeding, improves pumpability
  1. Drilling and Piling Projects
  • Used in drilling fluids as a wrapper and fluid loss reducer
  • Improves mud flow, helps protect the hole walls
  • Prevents rock pieces from breaking up and helps the hole stay stable
  1. Incense and Wax Making
  • Mix powdered PAM with wood powder or glue powder
  • Makes the sticks stronger and helps bind all parts together,Improves product quality and final shape

📌 Summary

PAM is very useful for increasing viscosity and stickiness. It is used in many industries like building, drilling, chemicals, and daily products. Choosing the right form—powder or granules—and using the right amount can improve work efficiency and product quality.
